SAVE THE DATE: Stories from Storytown 2
Kick off your Independence Day 4-day weekend with an evening of stories and music at our second Stories from Storytown event. It will be Wednesday July 3, 7-8:20pm at Caveat, Manhattan’s Lower East Side venue for “playful, intelligent nightlife”. In case Stories from Storytown is new to you, it’s a bimonthly series that mixes storytelling with live music from the band Storytown, hosted by Storytown’s bandleader Guy Story.
This second event will feature three fascinating guests: author/critic/songwriter David Hajdu, live music producer Wendy Magro, and songwriter/composer/guitarist extraordinaire Gary Lucas.
Here’s more about our storytellers:
David Hajdu is author, critic, and songwriter. He is a three-time winner of the ASCAP/Deems Taylor Award for Music Writing, and a three-time finalist for the National Book Critics Circle Award. His book, "Lush Life: A Biography of Billy Strayhorn," was named one of the Hundred Best Nonfiction Books of All Time by The New York Times. His songs have been performed at Carnegie Hall, Disney Hall, and jazz clubs around the country, and have been recorded on eight albums, including two devoted solely to his music. He teaches at Columbia University and is currently working on two books: a fictional oral history of an imaginary composer, and a graphic nonfiction book about vaudeville.
Wendy Magro is currently the Manager of Artistic Projects at Carnegie Hall and produces and programs Carnegie Hall’s Citywide series, which brings free programming to all five boroughs. In addition to the Citywide series, Wendy produces concerts in all three performance spaces at Carnegie Hall in genres ranging from classical to world to jazz. She has also produced such varied events as the New Year’s Eve Ball Drop, Lincoln Center’s Midsummer Night Swing series, The Lord of the Rings Soundtrack Live to Film at Radio City, and many others. A graduate of Manhattan School of Music, Wendy holds a bachelor’s degree in Piano Performance and is the proud dog mom to Mitts, a 100-pound rescued Pit Bull/Rottweiler. And…she has perfect pitch.
Gary Lucas is a world-renowned guitarist, Grammy-nominated songwriter and composer. He tours extensively and has played in over 40 countries, including China, Japan, South Korea, Brazil, Cuba, Australia, and all across Europe and the US. Gary has released over 30 acclaimed solo and ensemble albums in every conceivable genre – including avant-rock, jazz, world, classical and electronica – and played on 50 more. He has worked and collaborated with a who’s who of modern music, including Leonard Bernstein, Lou Reed, Jeff Buckley, Nick Cave, Amanda Palmer, Joan Osborne, Nona Hendryx, John Cale, Bob Weir and others. He’s composed a dozen live film scores accompanying films both silent and sound, and he has received both a Lifetime Achievement Award for his songwriting with Jeff Buckley in Livorno Italy and an Award for Cultural Diplomacy from the US Consul General of Milan.
And as usual, Storytown will fill in with live songs, new and old. So SAVE THE DATE and bring your friends: Wednesday July 3, 7pm, Caveat, 21a Clinton St, New York, NY.
Thanks for listening.
