Letting Go

Sadly I can’t remember what specific situation prompted these lyrics. I was having a moment when I had a rush of thoughts about how you can want something so much you can kill it, or maybe kill what it is that you love about it. Or maybe, in a Heisenbergian Uncertainty Principle-ish kind of way, holding it too close changes your relationship with it. Whatever.

“If you love someone, set them free; if they come back to you, it was meant to be.”

Maybe I’m a budding Buddhist (new stage name?). As I understand it, in the Buddhist concept of non-attachment, you “let go” of things – you quit trying to control things that you can’t control. (Back when I gave the occasional talk to budding entrepreneurs – see how what I did there? – I would counsel folks not to waste any energy trying to solve problems they can’t solve.)

Anyway, somehow a bunch of thoughts like these have engendered the rather terse and spare lyrics of this song. I hope they work for you. If not, then I recommend that you just LET GO of needing to understand my lyrics.s

Oh, and what do I mean when I say “I’m Gone”? I guess I’m trying to say that, if you’re prone to defining yourself by relationships, letting go of them can feel like self-annihilation. But it can also feel, exhilaratingly, like freedom.

Let me know what you think. And please keep listening.
