Entitlement
OK, back to being serious. Well, maybe more like cranky and annoyed.
Remember Dilbert?
Every time, I mean every time someone is arrested for something, they plead innocent. What kind of model is this, both for ourselves and for those beautiful and eager young recipients of our hard-won wisdom (i.e. children), that the standard practice is to say “I DIDN’T DO IT!” immediately?
Friends who are steeped In the law have educated me about this phenomenon:
A lawyer friend says further that “my understanding is that if you just plead guilty at the beginning, the DAs can press for whatever sentence they want. If you initially plead not guilty, you can negotiate a proposed sentence in exchange for not going to trial. The whole system is f**ked up by the plea-bargain process”.
Sigh.
Some say that millennials have an “entitlement complex”. Some say that my generation is responsible for this. Whatever.
Anyway, this idea that, if you can get away with it, you deserve it, is everywhere and has been for some time:
“I took a lot of finance courses at Wharton. First they taught you all the rules and regulations. Then they taught you that those rules and regulations are really meant to be broken.” - Don “The Con” Trump
[Sorry if I’ve offended anyone.]
This week’s video is a pretty simple lyric one, not as visually entertaining as I’d like. But I’m hoping I can get away with it. The band has played this song live a couple of times, but since I don’t have a good recording of that you’ll have to settle for this:
The views, thoughts, and opinions expressed in the preceding song and video belong solely to the author, and not necessarily to the author's friends, family, affiliations or other group or individual.
